Frequently asked

QUESTIONS

  • What are your digital versions?
Our digital versions come as 2 or 3 PDF files contained in a Zip file to be downloaded: a 'Standard' version, a 'Single sided' versions and (if there is more than one page) a 'Double sided' version. The download links appear in the 'Thank You' page after purchase and are emailed as well. This emailed link is valid for up to 30 days.
  • What are your 'Standard' digital versions?
Our 'Standard' versions have equal margins on both sides so the music is centred within the page. This makes it ideal for use digitally or to be printed out and used in plastic wallets or some other way which won't encroach into the music. If you are looking to hole punch or otherwise bind the music, one of the other versions may be more suited to your needs.
  • What are your 'Single sided' digital versions?
Our 'Single sided' versions have a larger magin on the left side of each page. This makes it ideal if you want/are only able to print single sided and will be hole punching or binding the music.
  • What are your 'Double sided' digital versions?
Our 'Double sided' versions have a larger magin on alternating sides, with odd numbered pages having a larger margin on the left side and even numbered pages having a larger margin on the right side. This makes it ideal if you want to/can print double sided and will be hole punching or binding the music.
  • What are your mobile versions?
Our mobile versions are easier to download and use on a smartphone or tablet than our digital versions as they come as just a single PDF file (our 'Standard' version). This avoids the difficulties with downloading and opening Zip files on mobile devices. The download links appear in the 'Thank You' page after purchase and are emailed as well. This emailed link is valid for up to 30 days.
  • How do you engrave/write your scores?
Our scores are intended to show the composer's intention as much as possible while also not adding too much more to allow for performers to not feel too restricted when interpreting the music. In this spirit, we keep our own editing to a minimum. We use multiple sources, both other editions (usually first editions and urtext editions) and performances, to make sure that our scores are accurate and include the details that the composer wanted. Then we edit the format of the score if needed so that it is as clear as possible to read.
  • How do you use cautionary accidentals?
We follow standard rules for accidentals meaning that they do not carry over to the next bar (apart from in the case of ties across barlines). This means that most of the time, we do not use cautionary accidentals that can sometimes unnecessarily confuse the sense of the key. However, sometimes a reminder can be helpful, especially when sight-reading. Therefore, we occasionally use cautionary accidentals but these are signified by being inside a pair of brackets. This will make it clearer that the cautionary accidentals are part of the key signature. As a general rule, if there is an accidental within half a bar over the previous barline, a cautionary accidental will be used just as a reminder to not carry that over. There may be other situations where a cautionary accidental will be used but the idea is that they are there just as a reminder.
  • Why are there no fingering markings?
Many editions add suggested fingering markings to the scores as guides. We don't do this for two reasons: Firstly, as each performer is different, sometimes one fingering marking would not suit everyone. Working out what fingering works best for you is part of the process of learning a piece and making a performance your own. Secondly, fingering markings can sometimes clutter a page which can make some scores more unclear than they otherwise could be, especially if you prefer a different fingering so also have to correct the markings.
  • Can I provide feedback about your editing decisions?
Our scores are for the performer first and foremost so we always welcome any feedback that will help us improve how we edit the music we publish. If you have any suggestions or comments, please email us at info@dkylmusic.co.uk or use our contact form on our 'Contact Us' page.
  • How do you manufacture your scores?
We use 100% recycled A4 120gsm paper for our scores and our covers are also 100% recycled A4 300gsm card. As paper is the material that we use the most, it was important that we made sure the paper we used was as environmentally responsible as possible. We use manual wire binding to reduce the amount of electricity we use. Wire binding also means that no glue is used in the production process as well.
  • What else do you do?
All our packaging that we deliver our products in are either made of recycled material or FSC certified (or both) which means that it is responsibly produced. Any physical promotional material we use is also made from recycled or otherwise environmentally responsible material. We source our materials from UK based companies and only deliver our physical products within the UK. This is to reduce the environmental cost of both our inbound and outbound deliveries. We produce digital versions of all our scores as well in order to offer a form of obtaining our music which involves no raw materials to manufacture or deliver.
  • Can I submit suggestions to improve your environmental impact?
We want to be as environmentally responsible as possible in all aspects of our business but we are not experts in the field. Therefore, we would welcome any and all suggestions regarding how we can improve in this area. There are already certain processes that we are looking at making improvements in if possible but we are always willing to look at more. If you want to make any suggestions or comments, please email us at info@dkylmusic.co.uk or use our contact form on our 'Contact Us' page.
  • What is your newsletter for?
Our newsletter will keep you updated when we release new scores to our range and any other important updates to our website or business as a whole. It will also inform you of any sales or offers that are happening. We will send a maximum of two newsletters per month to avoid you receiving too many.
  • Why do you ask for a country when subscribing?
We currently only deliver our physical scores to the UK, though our digital scores can be downloaded from other countries (depending on the legislation of your individual country). However, if there is sufficient interest, we will look to offer delivery to more areas. Collecting the countries of our newsletter subscribers will help us get a general idea of any other countries that have an interest in our business. Any addition of countries to our delivery options will be communicated in our newsletters.
  • How do I unsubscribe to receiving the newsletter?
If you wish to unsubscribe, there is an option on each newsletter that you can select in order to do so.

Covid-19 update:

In order to ensure the safety of our customers and everyone else involved during the process, we will not be delivering any of our Spiral Scores until the situation improves. You can still purchase any of our Spiral Scores during this time, but they will not be delivered until it has been decided that it is safe to do so.

Our Digital and Mobile scores are unaffected and are still available to purchase and download.
